The ass who was never satisfied

The ass who was never satisfied

The Ass and His Masters

An Ass, belonging to an herb-seller (gardener) who gave him too little food and too much work made a petition to Jupiter (a pagan god) to be released from his present service and provided with another master. Jupiter, after warning him that he would repent his request, caused him to be sold to a tile-maker. Shortly afterwards, finding that he had heavier loads to carry and harder work in the brick-field, he petitioned for another change of master. Jupiter, telling him that it would be the last time that he could grant his request, ordained that he be sold to a tanner. The Ass found that he had fallen into worse hands, and noting his master’s occupation, said, groaning: “It would have been better for me to have been either starved by the one, or to have been overworked by the other of my former masters, than to have been bought by my present owner, who will even after I am dead tan my hide, and make me useful to him.” He that finds discontentment in one place is not likely to find happiness in another.

The Bible tells us that the Israelites were never content and have been ungrateful to God. Time and time again, they easily forget what God has done for them and against their oppressors.

Let’s look at the Book of Judges Chapter 10:6 – 11:3

Someone wrote, “Most people mess up something good by looking for something better just to end up with something worse.” Have you find yourself looking for greener pastures?

The Israelites has a history of always looking for greener pasture even though God has told them to stay away from the idols and beliefs of the nations surrounding them. In verse 6, “Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines.”

We see here the word “again” which means that the Israelites have been serving idols (or the pagan gods) over and over again! What’s an idol?

  • An idol is anything that we think is more important than God. What are they?
  • It could be a person, money or any kinds of activity.
  • Look back in your life now, what are the things that value over God. Have you glorify the creation over the Creator?

Regret and Repentance

In verse 10, “Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, ‘We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.’”

Because of the pain and suffering that the Israelites have experienced, they prayed to God once again. They regretted what they had done. They are now in agony!

  • They felt bad about abandoning God and they experienced the consequences of their sin.
  • Similar to the Ass or the donkey on the fable, regret happens when you suffer and you want to get out of it.

In your current situation, what are the things that you regret, the things that give you anguish or dissatisfaction?

The differences:

  • Regret
    • Regret is a negative emotion that brings a person into downward spiral because of dwelling in it. You get drown into self-contemplation.
    • Regret is when a person continuously thinks about his/her mistakes.
    • Regret leaves a person in a state of anxiety, anger, hatred and depression.
    • It is a negative emotion and the donkey, a person who regrets would normally do the same mistakes over and over again.
  • Repent
    • It is a positive emotion that compels a person to change the direction of his/her life. It’s a complete turn around. Like this morning, I my wife and I went north and after this service, we will go south.
    • Repentance is when a person who made a mistake and realizes what he has done and then seeks forgiveness for his actions.
    • Repentance is when a person takes a stand and resolve that he would never do it again.
    • Repentance affects our entire being and in the context of the Bible, affects our eternal life.

So, regret will never give us solution but would bring us dissolution, while repentance transforms our lives and gives us entrance to a new life.

God’s mercy and grace

Judges 10:10 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”

11 The Lord replied, “When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites[c] oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? 13 But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”

15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.

The Israelites regretted what they had done and prayed to God. The latter part of verse 16 described what God felt, And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer – God could Not bear the misery of the people – Then and Now.

Easter is a season to remember that God saw our misery against the evil one. He saw that we cannot attain our freedom on our own and that’s why He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ to bear our sins on the cross so that whoever believe in Him and confess that He is our Lord and Savior will have an everlasting life with Him.

Instead of repenting, the Israelites regretted what they have done. However, because of God’s mercy and grace, He provided the Israelites a Judge and for us, a deliverer – Jesus, who released us from our captivity.

Judges 11:1-3, “Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. 2 Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.”

  • Jephthah’s mother was a prostitute. The mother of Jesus was accused of being unfaithful to her fiancé when she got pregnant before marriage.
  • Jepthah was driven away from his family, Jesus left heaven and came to earth.
  • Jephthah surrounded himself with scoundrels, Jesus disciples were considered uneducated.
  • God sent a judge, Jephthah to save the Israelites; God sent His one and only Son to save the world.
  • The world says you are not worthy; the Word of God says you are worthy through Jesus Christ.
  • The world says regret but the Word of God says repent.
  • The world says you’re not a child of God; the Bible says, we become children of God.

The Bible says that the devil use and abuse people on this earth and afterwards, the people who do not repent and receive Jesus Christ in their hearts, would experience the eternal punishment. Similar to the fable where the ass said, “who even after I am dead tan my hide, and make me useful to him.

The Israelites regretted for their ongoing prostitutions to other gods or idols but did not repent. They were sorrowful for their past actions but did not make a complete change in their faith and trust in God.

Christ suffered and died on the cross and later rose again and is now seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. Those who put their faith in Him and make Him their Lord and Savior would live forever with Him.

Holy Friday is a reminder of the saving grace, the crucifixion, burial and on Easter Sunday – the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. He left heaven and came to earth to save all of us from the eternal punishment. He is now offering you the eternal life.

Romans 3:22-24, This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

You can choose to regret or to repent. Do not fall into negative and destructive effects of regret but choose the victorious life through repentance and accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. If you regretted in the past, now is the time to repent to receive liberty and receive the free gift that God has for you. I invite to come and receive the liberty and a victorious life in Christ.

Each day has enough trouble of its own

My left eyebrow is twitching!

why does your eye lid or eye brow twitch?

Why does your eye lid or eye brow twitch?

Could it be that I drank too much coffee this morning or because I need new eyes prescription (I am scheduled to go to my eye doctor early this afternoon). It could not be due to my consumption of a glass of wine last night nor lack of sleep. It is not allergy season yet and my eyes were not dry. My eyes are not tired, it’s only 11am.

I came up with the last possible cause, stress. Somehow, stress can make many parts of our body twitch, one of them is eyebrow or eye lid.

It started yesterday when I received an email from a potential partner about some miscommunications. Then later yesterday, I received a message that one of our partners got a wrong impression of how we operate in one aspect of our ministry. In addition, there are many other things that I need to communicate with to find out about the issues. On top of that, I have some other things that has been on hold and I am getting frustrated. Immediately, my mind started to go in different directions. My emotions could not decide whether to feel offended or come up with ideas to defend myself. At the same time, my mind started to analyze the situations and to produce solutions.

Then early this morning,  I remembered that I just wrote a Blog earlier yesterday about Faith in the midst of uncertainties. I asked my wife and my mother to pray for me. I also prayed that God would grant me wisdom to deal with the situations. As my wife and I were on our way to our office, God spoke to me, “You don’t have to solve all the problems!” That’s it!

Suddenly, I realized that I don’t have to defend myself nor to come up with the all the solutions all by myself. There are things that can wait and there are things that I don’t need to let consume a lot of my time. There are situations that are phantom and emotions that are way out of line. Then our logical minds can play tricks on us! Of course there things that we need to deal with but it’s not the end of the world if we’re not able to take care of it!

25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?…33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:25-27, 33-34

Just before I wrote this, I spoke with 2 of our partners. One gave me some good counsel and I complimented another instead of trying to solve the problem immediately. (My eyebrow stopped twitching!)

Here’s what you can do immediately when your eyelids or eyebrows start to twitch, pray to God for the peace that surpasses all understanding and ask Him to speak to you. If that does not work for you, get 2 pieces of scotch tape, tape them on the opposite side of the part that is twitching while pulling them outward to stretch the skin. That should do the job for you!

God bless,

Merlin

Co-create with God

Last week, I shared with you a few amazing stories that I have witnessed in the past several weeks. It is fascinating to see when you become more aware of the supernatural, the greater reality that is beyond our physical senses. You and I are a part of the divine plan. But most of the time, we are not connected in the spiritual dimension. Generally, we are disconnected and thereby miss some pretty astounding events that can directly affect our worldview of reality and can change the course of lives of others and the history of a community.

If the greater reality is beyond our natural senses, how can we tune in with what’s going on in the spiritual realm? The answer is to train ourselves to be more conscious about the correlation between the natural and the supernatural, the physical and the spiritual. How do we do this?

We will start with a simple step and example based on a phenomenal story that just happened yesterday. I wrote from my previous Blog that another opportunity had landed on my lap. My organization has the opportunity to acquire a property worth more than half a million dollars with no cash involved on our part. As a Consultant, I come across some pretty interesting situations, this is one of them.

God has bigger plan

God has bigger plan

A Pastor and his wife came to my office several weeks ago asking to help them decide about the future of their church. The church building sits on a 7-acre land. It has 2 houses, a youth building that is not being used currently, a playground, a community center, a detached garage and a large pond. Back in the 80’s, the church had more 400 attendees. Throughout the years, and with many reasons, the church continuously dwindled down in number. Currently, it has less than 20 attendees. Needless to say, they cannot continue to pay the bills including the mortgage.

Simultaneously, I am helping a Hispanic church to find a site for their food pantry. I just trained them to start their own pantry and this is the last piece to get them started. I introduced them to the Pastor that I am consulting with. They visited the place and fell in love with it. The Hispanic Pastor gathered her leaders and we had a meeting. They asked for my advice and guided them in the decision-making process. They decided to rent a portion of the church!

Suddenly, I found myself in the middle of 2 churches who needed my advice. This put me in an awkward position so after prayers and several conversations with my wife and friends, I decided not to have an interest in the property.

We had a few meetings with the Pastor who owns the church, we prayed together and discussed the best option for them. We looked at the sources of their income and the list of expenses. They agreed to follow the plans and strategy that I presented to them. I showed them that they can actually keep the property even with just one renter. Yesterday (Sept. 23, 2014), I also negotiated with their mortgage company to skip the Principal payment for 12 months until they get back on the black. In addition, I also negotiated to spread out the payment for the last 2 unpaid monthly mortgage bills.

Through prayers (spiritual) and through meetings and evaluations (physical), we have solved the potential loss of a beautiful property. Both churches will be working to maximize their impact in the community and to utilize the property in greater way. This is an example of becoming more aware of our spiritual surrounding. It is through our communion with the Lord that we can hear more of His voice. We will develop our spiritual senses as we tune in with the greater reality.

There are more to the story but I would like for you to share yours. Do not think that your story is not worth sharing. God does not look from man’s perspective. Remember when Jesus fed the 5,000 through the little boy who had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish? His disciples did not think that the food they will eat later would come from a child with only a handful of food! God is not bound by our reality, He is beyond time and space, He is infinite, He is the God of all creation.

This is the opportunity that lie in front of us – we can co-labor and co-create with God. Be aware of your spiritual space, tune in to the supernatural and see more of heaven here on earth. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

God bless,

Merlin

Remember the Fire?

Remember when you first commit your life to Jesus Christ?

Remember when you first experience God?

Two months ago, I posted about a house fire that happened to a Pastor who is friend of mine. Many people have helped him in terms of some donated money, furniture & appliances and most of all, prayers. I have been helping him in finding out the best solution for the future of the house that was burned. I have a sense that this tragedy will end up to be a blessing for him and his family. I kept encouraging him and praying for him in the past several weeks.

Last Monday, we heard news about the house and we did more negotiations. We were confirmed that there’s nothing else we can do, so we settled for what was agreed upon. Tonight, I received a message to call the main person regarding the house. We received great news; something that we did not expect!

In these past several months, God has been showing me things that are beyond my imagination. The unexpected things such as the pallet shelving, the launching of one-of a kind food pantry, the $70k walk-in freezer donation and many more.

There is another huge thing that has fall on my lap just 2 weeks ago. I ask that you pray for wisdom and discernment on my part. This one could impact thousands of people and may be an integral part in this particular community for years to come.

God is awesome! I would like to invite you come alongside with me in experiencing the goodness of God. Some people are experimenting with God to see what happens when you trust Him. I would like to invite you to journey with me in fully trusting God in every aspect of our lives.

There’s a difference between making Jesus as our Savior and making Him as our Lord. Our lives reflect who our Lord is – the way we conduct ourselves, react on situations, make decisions and our habits. Our reality is mostly based on our experience. I think many of us have knowledge of God but do not have much of experiencing life with Him – that’s why sometimes we find out selves asking ” where is God in this situation?” Unless we experience Him intimately, His reality in our lives would be fragmented.

Remember when you first experience God and felt that He is involved in your life? If you are like me, I was on fire! It seem like God is so close to me… not only during Sunday but every day of the week! What if we fully trust that every aspect of our lives is connected with our relationship with God…our finances, our relationships, our health and our spiritual life? This may be a silly question: “What if all of our life experience is directly interconnected with our relationship with God?” How would we cope with our failures and celebrate our success, treat our  families, work with our associates and deal with our neighbors? If God is ever present in our consciousness, what would our lifestyle be, how would we react with every situation – good or bad, and what would be our perspective in life.

Here’s what I have in mind. I will share with you my experience with Him. Similar with what I have been writing before, I will continue sharing with you what God has been doing in the ministry of FHL. This time, I will be more intimate and share more of my personal experience with Him such as frustrations, praises and prayers, requests and dreams, questions and answers and, my experience. I would like to encourage you to share your stories as well, make comments, prayers and praises. Let’s experience God and share our stories to encourage and to uplift one another.

I hope you would consider joining me in learning more about ourselves and our relationship with the God that we profess – our Lord and our Savior, Jesus Christ. What’s your story and what has God been doing in your life? Remember your passion for Christ when you were a new Christian? Remember the fire in your heart?

“Preacher, I’m a drug dealer!”

What would you do if a drug dealer wearing dark sunglasses suddenly walked in the middle of sanctuary during the middle of your sermon at a church located in one of the most dangerous cities in the US? The suspicious man sat in the front row with his hands in the pockets of his jacket.

I woke up early on Sunday, May 25th, 2014 to prepare my message at Tree of Life Ministries just north of downtown Indianapolis. I have been thinking about the message in the past several days but could not get myself to write it. I knew I will be speaking about the occasion – Memorial Day. While researching and writing my message, I suddenly felt my heart beat fast, I hyper ventilated and I felt that I was being attacked by the enemy. I prayed and continued writing my message while I breath hard to suck more air in my lungs.

My parents came with me to the church and we arrived just on time. The church rents a space at a store front located at a busy intersection.  I heard just several months ago, there were shootings at the intersection. This is an area that is considered 17th most dangerous neighborhoods in the US. This small church has only 3 rooms – the sanctuary, the back room with 2 restrooms and a pantry. They were just finishing their Sunday Bible Study when we arrived.

At the Bible study, they were talking about marriage and somehow they started talking about addiction. When I heard the word “addiction”, I thought I should mention something about it when I preach. After the Bible Study, we had a brief intermission, then I saw my daughter pulling up at the curb and my instinct told me I should help her to park. As soon as I got outside, my daughter immediately said that she does not feel safe because the people on the street were staring at her suspiciously and she is afraid to park her car on the street. I assured her that nothing bad will happen.

The style of the church worship team is southern blues. I really like the freedom to worship with them. After a few minutes of worship, I felt shaky and weak. I was trying to figure out if it was because of low blood sugar or I was just nervous. I went to the back room and helped myself with a doughnut and coffee to regain my strength. Then, I prayed for strength and for clarity of mind.

I still felt a little weak as I approach the podium. However, I forgot about my physical weakness when I started to talk. “Even just for one” was the title of my message.  There were about 20 adults including my parents, my daughter and me. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit as I was getting into my message. Suddenly, a man wearing rugged clothes with dark sun glasses walked in the middle of the sanctuary and sat in the front row. I was talking about the Parable of the lost sheep. Jesus left the 99 to find the lost one – the backslider.

"I'm a drug dealer"

“I’m a drug dealer”

All of a sudden, the person who walked in late, raise his hand. After acknowledging him, he said, “I am a drug dealer, I need help.” It took me a couple of seconds to compose myself. I told him that God can heal him. He took his sunglasses and his eyes told me that he was serious. I asked the pastor of the church if we can take a few minutes to pray for him. After prayer, I encouraged him with positive words and affirmation. A couple of people were wiping their tears as they were praying.

He received a mighty move of God in his life

He received a mighty move of God in his life

Before I ended my message, I prayed for the leaders of the church for wisdom, protection and provision. As soon as I got to my seat, a well-built man came to me, shook my hands and gave me a big hug. Then, the pastor came and did an altar call. The same person who shook my hands came to the front to receive Jesus as his Savior. The entire church raised up to their feet, clapped their hands and more people started to weep. I found out later that he was the son of one of the church leaders. It was a chain reaction. When he saw the boldness of the drug dealer who confessed publicly, he opened up to the grace of God. God has been pursuing him and He used the drug dealer to communicate His unconditional love.

As they were praying for this gentleman, the pastor’s wife began to praise God with her voice and her entire body. She was being filled by the Holy Spirit. I gave the man a big hug and encouraged him by telling him that he will be used by God mightily by leading an army of God.

I was awe struck by the entire service. In my years of preaching at different churches, I had never experienced someone interrupting my sermon by saying he is a drug dealer. Through him, the “one” who was lost was found. This happened in a small church located in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the US. The small church had no fancy sanctuary but they have authentic congregation, the church sits in a rough neighborhood but they have peace inside their building and in their hearts, the church is definitely not the building, but the people who cares for everyone. It is a church that welcomes everyone, prostitutes, drunkards, addicts and the poor in spirit, similar to the crowd that Jesus hanged out with. It is a church that is willing to interrupt the service, let go of their plan for the service and let the Holy Spirit take over the schedule for the day. They are small in number but they have big hearts for the lost. More is not always better and the central point is not always bigger.

Later, I realized why I couldn’t get myself to sit down and to write the message, why I hyper ventilated while writing the message and why I felt weak during the worship. God was about to do something very special for 2 people and the entire congregation that Sunday morning. The person who walked in late and interrupted the service by saying, “Preacher, I am a drug dealer!” was used by God “Even for just one” lost sheep.

Praise you, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, my Lord and my Savior.
